By constructing the south facing wall of the home with windows, thermal mass, and eaves appropiate for the location, the sun will warm the house in the winter, and will be shaded by the eaves in the summer. Passive cooling can be accomplished with solar chimneys. The windows will also allow heat to radiate outwards at night for cooling. The thermal mass stores heat during the day and releases it at night to even out the temperatures and facilitate both summer cooling and winter heating.
Roof designed for passive heating and cooling. Retrofitting is very expensive... I'm finding... Sadly...
Cooling towers and ventilation chimneys to circulate air without fans through the rooms and the earth tubes.
