My parents have a central vacuum and I must admit it's very nice, quick and easy to vacuum. It appears that the motor can be more powerful since it's located elsewhere, and since it's usually vented outdoors it doesn't just pick up the fine dust in the house and throw it in the air.
Also, I would go with a central vacuum cleaning system. Wish I had one put in here when the house was being built.

If you are going to go with a central vacuum, consider adding floor-level sweep-ins throughout the house. They have a foot switch to turn on the vacuum, and you simply sweep the dust into them. Those that have them tell me they work well.
